THEORIES OF ASIAN ARCHITECTURE (ARC60704)
Project 1: Contextual Study Sketch Journal of a Traditional Street

This project focuses on exploring and documenting the place identity of traditional streets in Kuala Lumpur, highlighting how socio-cultural, economic, and political factors shape their unique characteristics. We are required to conduct field studies, including visual documentation, observational notes, and interviews, to capture both tangible architectural elements and intangible cultural practices. The project aims to enhance our understanding of these streets' identity, the impact of urbanization, and the importance of cultural preservation. The final output was a sketch journal that combines visual and written reflections, fostering awareness of the need to balance modernization with the preservation of cultural heritage.

Reflection

Participating in the "Contextual Study Sketch Journal of a Traditional Street" project was enlightening, deepening my appreciation for the rich history and culture of Kuala Lumpur's traditional streets. Fieldwork provided valuable insights into how socio-cultural, economic, and political factors shape these areas. Interacting with the local community underscored the importance of preserving cultural narratives amid urbanization. The project honed my skills in visual analysis, cultural observation, and critical thinking. However, I could improve in planning, preliminary research, and time management, emphasizing more on the need for cultural preservation and sensitive urban development.

Project 2: Poster and Seminar-Contemporary Issues in Asian Architecture

This project explores tradition and modernization in Asian architecture. In groups of 6-7, we investigate topics like place identity, adaptive reuse, sustainable cultural heritage tourism, or cultural spaces, focusing on cultural preservation, sustainable design, and globalization's impact. Using problem-based learning, we develop a conservation strategy to preserve historical significance amid urban development. The final deliverables are a research poster and a 10-minute video presentation. The project aims to enhance our understanding of vernacular architecture, develop critical thinking, and improve research presentation skills.

Reflection

This group project was a transformative experience that deepened my understanding of the impact of globalization on Asian architecture, particularly regarding the balance between tradition and modernity. I learned the importance of teamwork, time management, and understanding others' perspectives. Despite facing challenges in creating logical solutions, attending tutorial classes and discussions with the tutor clarified our approach. While more preliminary research would have been beneficial, the project significantly enhanced my critical thinking and appreciation for balancing modernism with cultural heritage.
